Tonight's dinner

I wish this dish photographed better! I'm not going to admit to how much butter goes into this. It's one of my favorites- it's made with pastina which is a tiny grain that cooks up quickly- 5 minutes for the pasta to be soft. Tonight's had onion, carrot, red pepper, broccoli, and spinach. It's a great way to get a daily dose of veggies (and butter!) and a very filling meal. I don't think there's anything better than the smell of onions sauteing.

  1. What a great looking meal! We love pastina over here. Hubby eats it with lemon juice and pepper. I never thought to do the veggies. I'll have to try it! The only con with pastina is that it gets EVERYWHERE! At least it does when little kids eat it. I think the last time one kid had it in her hair...but that might just be my family :)

  2. Hey Jessica,

You like photographing your food, so I thought I'd throw you a food photo pointer. Place a table lamp on the table not directly beside the dish but half way between the side and rear. Then set your camera on a tripod in front of the dish. Try and frame out the lamp. Put the camera on a timer with the auto exposure, and voila! You've got a really appetizing picture of your fabulous dish. :)

  3. Crystal- for a whole box of pastina, the recipe would be: melt one stick of butter (haven't figured out a way around this yet!) and saute chopped onions, carrots, red pepper until veggies are nice and soft. Add in the broccoli. Add a box of pastina and a can of chicken broth. Bring to a boil. Add a handful or two of spinach on top and do not stir in. Turn the heat down to low and cover. In about 5-6 minutes, should be done!

Driven Mad- Awesome, thanks for the tip!! I will definitely have to try that next time. I hope to get a better camera in the next year too, the current one's options go only as far as "portrait mode" vs. "action mode"!

  4. Love the picts of both the pastina dish and the chicken pot pie. It might need a new name, though, Jess. It is definitely a "deep dish" pie. Looks yummy--just like momma used to make. :-) Thanks for sharing.
